Synergy business model

Synergy

When it comes to making money synergy is commonly used among successful business people. You will find that the most successful business people do not rely on a single business, nor do they rely on a single source of income. If they are in retail they are most likely selling products that complement one another, or if they have more than one service, each of the services complement or help the other. Now I'm not recommending you start multiple businesses at this point, but what I am recommending is that you design whatever business you start to include synergy as part of your business model.
One of the best examples around his Amazon.com. This is a company built on synergy and one in which the majority of the business is based on. Each time Amazon has added a product they have always taken in consideration how the new product incorporates with existing products. Their warehousing and shipping were initially all designed around shipping books. Books were chosen in part because they can be shipped without packing. When Amazon added music to their catalog, there was very little transitioning or adjustment needed for their warehousing equipment.
Another prime example would be insurance. Many insurance companies started out selling life insurance policies and then later added auto and home. Some of these companies even expanded into investment banking and similar products.
The main idea is to keep synergy in mind no matter what you are doing with your business and not just with products or services. Synergy should also be kept in mind when you're designing the organization itself. Making sure that employees, departments and all other aspects of the business are not only working together but complementing and helping one another.
When you look at nature, you will see that this is the one thing that is incorporated into everything that nature has designed. It is a seamless and energy efficient way to do just about everything.
So the next time your manager, boss or corporate CEO asks you how can we improve our company, think about synergy first.
